Self-AssessmentIn any subject area, practice and teacher feedback are essential for learning. XpressLab's self-assessment activities provide students with a secure environment where they can practice answering questions related to course content and receive immediate feedback on their answer.

Interviews with teachers and students strongly suggest that oral language practice is very important in second and foreign language aquisition. Students have said that they often feel intimidated when they have to speak in class and that with the number students in a class, it is difficult to have enough opportunity to speak in the target language. XpressLab's self-assessment activities give students a way to practice in private as often as they wish, thus helping them to gain confidence so that they will be ready for in-class oral communication.

XpressLab has three types of self-assessment activities that enable teachers to extend the classroom online. Self-assessment activities can be used to support the development of listening, speaking and reading skills.

Self-assessment activites include:

  1. Questions with Sample Answers: In this type of activity, students are presented with a voice recorded question. Students record their answer and then listen to a sample answer recorded by the teacher to check the accuracy of their answer.

  2. There are two multiple choice question types.

    • The first requires students to listen to and/or read a question, then listen to four voice recorded answer options. Students select the answer they think is correct. Students are provided with immediate feedback by the system on their answer.
    • The second requires students to read and/or listen to a question. They then read four possible answers and select the one that they think answers the question. Students receive immediate feedback on their answer.

  3. True/False questions require students to listen to or read a question and then indicate whether the question is true or false. Students receive immediate feedback on their answer.
